The Japan Rail Pass (also commonly called JR Pass) is a cost effective rail ticket which can be used for long distance train travels everywhere in Japan. The pass can be utilized only by foreign visitors who hold a Tourist visa and will stay in Japan no longer than 90 days. The Green Japan Rail Pass is a great idea if you are planning to visit Japan during busy periods (May, August and September) as beside higher comfort of your journey and the green Cars are mostly not as busy as standard trains which is a reassurance to have a seat available. The JR Green Pass entitles travelers to travel in the ‘Green Car’, the equivalent of our 1st class, on all Shinkansens and certain fast lines.
The Japanese Rail Pass is available to all foreign visitors who have obtained a Japanese Tourist Visa. The Japan Rail Pass is not eligible to purchase for Japanese nationals who live in Japan. However, Japanese people living abroad can apply for a Japan Rail Pass only if they are permanent residents of any country other than Japan for at least 10 years.
